Abstract

The current paper focuses the possibility of developing an innovative ICT instrument to support activities addressed to historical architecture preservation, respecting needs and specificities of cultural heritage. What seems particularly innovative is the approach to representation, actually overturned compared to current practice. Modelling is not developed starting from the object, but rather from the knowledge needed to represent it. This approach, reflecting the operational practice of conservation process, shows a structure able to solve, at least in a great part, critical issues currently referred to digital methods so far developed. In the presented research formalization is developed upon conceptual categories defined above all within architectural criticism and conservation context.
As a result, potentialities of new technologies, concerning strictness and capability of managing complex data systems, merge with humanistic issues.
The proposed model has at its core a knowledge base developed through information ontologies and oriented around the formalization and computability of all knowledge necessary for the full comprehension of the object of architectural heritage. Modelling is developed upon five principal domains: ‘artefact’, addressed to the building description, ‘actors’ referred to different subjects involved in the existence of the building, ‘cultural heritage investigation process’ defined to describe the collected knowledge regarding the construction, ‘lifecycle 1’ for the description of the transformation processes, ‘lifecycle 2’ focused on representation of building design and management.
In addition, the attempt to integrate two different approaches as BIM and Ontologies, opens to the possibility to combine the achievements reached within AEC (Architecture Engineering Construction) through BIM environment (design control and management) with an appropriate, semantically enriched and flexible representation, provided by Ontology. In the future, the aim is to widen the application field of the ontological model developed through new formalization, in order to verify its features and enhance potentialities.
