Feasibility study of Concrete with Recycled Nylon Fibers and Concrete Demolition Debris

The New Boundaries of Structural Concrete Session A - Performance and Life-cycle Costs of New Concrete Structures

Memoria tratta da "The New Boundaries of Structural Concrete: Session A – Performance and Life-Cycle Costs of New Concrete Structures", ACI IC - Ancona 2011

In this research work we focused on recycled nylon fibres from post-consumer carpet waste to be used as reinforcement in concrete. Moreover, also concrete demolition waste was considered in this study. The study considered four concrete mixtures, i.e. two ordinary concrete mixtures, one containing natural aggregates (C), the other with 100% recycled aggregates (CRA), and two concrete mixtures containing 5 kg/m3 of recycled polyamide fibres, one with natural (FC) and the other with 100% recycled aggregates (FCRA). The four mixes were investigated from a mechanical and microstructural standpoint. The concrete containing recycled aggregate and fibres showed a good overall performance. The final part of our work consisted of an analysis of the design for ultimate limit state of a FRC element as compared to a traditional reinforced concrete, in accordance with the current Codes. A parametric study of the influence of various factors (FRC residual tensile strength, tension and compression steel rebars, cross-section dimension, etc.) on the M-N limit domain of a FRC as well as RC (ordinary Reinforced Concrete) beam section was also carried out.
