Abstract
The developed research focuses on Ontology processing (namely knowledge formalization) for historical building representation. The model proposed is based upon five principal domains: ‘artefact’, ‘actors’, ‘cultural heritage investigation process’ and ‘lifecycle’. The latter was conceived into two main parts, the first addressed to the description of past building transformation (‘lifecycle 1’), the second referred to current and future transformations (‘lifecycle 2’).
The artefact (hypogeal space made up of a large hall with an apse, corresponding to the central nave of San Saba basilica in Rome) knowledge, collected through multiple traditional approaches, has been developed together with the Ontology processing.
The present paper has a double aim: on the one hand, it focuses on features and information concerning the building (historical data, constructive phases), on the other hand, it highlights how the Ontology processing was carried out. Rather than starting from abstract entities - following the current approach of processes for classificatory lexicons- the work moved from a physical object, from reality. This reality has acted as a testing bench for entities specifications: actually, the research referred at first to contents and later to meanings assigned.
The possibility/need to implement Ontology has leaded to propose a comparison with other cases of roman hypogeal architectures (the S. Clemente inferior basilica and the underground spaces of the S. Nicola in Carcere basilica) with regard to the description of space components.
